Flight from Frankfurt with Lufthansa to Paris. Form Paris to the island of Madagascar with Air Madagascar.
Landing at Antananarivo (“Town of the thousands”), capital city of Madagascar, named Tana for, in the morning. City tour and visit to the zoological-botanical garden Tsimbazaza, where you will observe your first lemurs. Then we walk to the upper town of Tana, which boasts14 Christian churches. You going on to see the printing-press, with which the first bible and the first newspaper in the language of Madagascar were printed. As in the case of all sacred places on Madagascar there are many "Fadys" (also known as bans, long-standing rules that must be observed to show appropriate respect. After breakfast there’s a trip to Ambohimanga (“the blue hill”) the holiest site and former royal town of the Merina. Up until 1896 no foreigner was allowed to visit. You are going on to see the Rova, the house of the king, constructed with rosewood, which is now more than 200 years old. We then stroll into the “Marche d’Artisanat” (the artisans’ market). On these markets and on the different small markets dotted around, there are hand-woven tissues, artistic silk embroideries, coloured painted material, semi-precious stones and much more onoffer. The colourful display of goods includes spices, medicinal plants, most marvellous fruits and various vegetables. Attention: These markets are not only centres for commerce and news, pickpockets can also be at large! After breakfast there’s a cosy trip via Ambatolampy (town of the rocks), passing highland villages, to Antsirabe (where there is much salt). Taking a tour by pousse-pousse, you really feel a part of this place in the highlands. The surroundings are rich in volcanic lakes and thermal springs. You cross the native country of the tribe of Besilea, which places paddy-field terraces in narrow valleys and on the steepest slopes. The roads to Ambositra (where there are many cattle) have many sections in poor condition. You visit the monastery of the Benediktiner and drive forward to Fiananrantsoa through a fertile hilly region. Sightseeing. Two overnight stays (B/D, approx. 240 km)
The golden Bambuslemur, discovered only in 1987, and the smallest frog in the world live in the unique national park of Ranomafana. You find out the secrets of the park on a circuit by foot. (B/D; approx. 120 km)
You travel to Ambalavaio (“the new town”) and you visit a workshop, where in former times the tribe of the Antaimoro - originally coming from Arabian countries - made their famous paper. They produced the paper to write down their knowledge of astrology, to trade art and to do mathematics. You come to the Isalo massif on a loose-surface track on the edge of the Horombe highland, to Ranohira along the Andringitra-mountains. Overnight stay at Hotel Orchidee** (B/D; approx. 290 km)
Today we start a walk through the Isalo massif, passing canyons, we finally find waterfalls and an oasis. With a little bit of luck you’ll see lemurs and black parrots. We picnic in the middle of a terrific landscape. Towards late afternoon we head back to your hotel. Overnight stay at Hotel Le Joyau del Isalo**. (B/D; approx. 12 km)
Passing over the semi-desert landscape you will see palmtrees, Baobabs and wooden tombs, then we go to Tulear (Toliara). Tulear is a former pirate stronghold. This region is inhabited by descendants of the Masai-herdsman. Overnight stay/Hotel Capricorne*** (B/D; approx. 270 km)
In accordance with the flight schedule, we transfer to the airport and fly to Fort Dauphin. Fort Dauphin is the most beautiful city of Madagascar, because it’s surrounded on three sides by the ocean. Hotel Le Dauphin*** or equivalent (B/D)
Via Amoasary and we drive on to Berenty. On the way you see Euphorbia-forests, gigantic mango and litchi-trees, tropical plants and Antanosy tombs. There’s an evening walk to observe the nocturnal lemurs like the mouse-maki and fossa. Don’t forget your torch! Overnight stay in bungalow Berenty Lodge**. (B/D; approx. 120 km)
Today's morning serves for the observation of animals and plants in the reservation once again. In the afternoon the journey descends to Fort Dauphin again. Overnight stay, Hotel Le Dauphin*** (B/D)
In the early morning there’s another walk: With a little bit of luck you’ll see Katta and Sifaka lemurs, giant tortoises, flying dogs, cactus and bottle trees. Passing through a sisal-plantation back to Fort Dauphin and a flight to Tana. Overnight stay, Hotel Gregoire***. (B/D; approx. 150 km)
Time to spend at your convenience in Tana. Possibility for further sightseeing and last chance shopping together with the guides. Room at the hotel for use during the day. In the evening transfer to the airport and later departure to Paris. (B/D on the aeroplane; approx. 80 km)
Arrival at Paris in the morning. Continuation of the flight with Lufthansa to Frankfurt.
