Madagaskar Travel · Informations · Marriages
Officially, marriage is only possible in accordance with the Madagascan State Department laws pertaining to the status of foreigners on Madagascar, assuming they have a permanent place of residence there. In practice this isn't strictly enforced however; foreigners who don't live in Madagascar also get married on the island.
You need the following documents:
an international birth certificate (registry office)
Reporting certificate (municipality)
the proof that there aren't marriage obstacles
the divorce document (court) if necessary
All documents must be translated into French as certified copies. If you haven’t mastered the French language, you should seek an interpreter also to be present at the wedding.
Witnesses you can find on the spot. The marriage-certificate must be presented to the embassy of your native country in Antananarivo in order for it to be recognizeded in your native country.
Please ask about the legal status of a marriage on Madagascar in your native country in advance. This is particularly important in cases where the marriage concerned has been awarded custody of juvenile children from an earlier marriage or common-law marriage.
